German is the most widely spoken mother language in the European Union and an official language in seven countries, spoken by approximately 130 million people, In 42 countries there are more than 7.5 million people who belong to German speaking minorities. The six countries that have German as their official language: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

15.4 million people currently speak German as a foreign language : 90 percent of them are school students and 10 percent are adults are represented in the PASCH network. Currently German government is reaching out to talents and academicians all over the world with many scholarships and fellowships for higher studies and research in the country.
